2015 Florida Football Recap

The 2015 was the first season under new football coach Jim McElwain.  McElwain came over from Colorado State and replaced Will Muschamp.  I was surprised by the hire, but then again McElwain spent four years as Alabama’s offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach.  You can tell Nick Saban’s coaching tree is getting awfully big these days.

Our problem this year was on offense.  Sure we put up 61 points against hapless New Mexico State in the opening game of the season.  We even followed that up with 31 points against East Carolina, but they can’t stop anyone.

We started to become exposed when the SEC started.  Only 14 points at Kentucky, 28 against Tennessee but 14 of those came in the closing minutes to win a miracle.

We did score 38 against Ole Miss in a game I’m still confused about, but mostly because of turnovers giving us the advantage.

Missouri’s offense was terrible so our 21 points there were enough for the win, but even then it was a turnover that gave us some points.

LSU we put up 28 in a loss and we did score 27 in beating Georgia. This is when things went straight down the toiler though.

We only scored 9 in a win over Vanderbilt.  We put up 24 at South Carolina against a team that had all but given up.  We then needed overtime to beat Florida Atlantic 20-14.  Against Florida State we got a safety to keep us from being shutout.  Our special teams was a big boost in only scoring 15 in the loss to Alabama, and then the bowl game against Michigan wasn’t pretty.  We could only get a single touchdown and nothing else.

Look, the defense was solid.  We only gave up 16.5 points per game.  We only allowed teams to rush for 120 yards per game and throw for 175.  But if we are going to take things to the next level the offense has to step up.

We over-achieved early in the year.  We got lucky to beat Tennessee.  We had a favorable schedule, but then when we stepped up to play quality opponents we completely tanked.  The finish against the Seminoles, Tide, and Wolverines was embarrassing.

I’m hoping that doesn’t carry over to 2016 and we can get back to playing quality football.
